In an unprecedented move, the Securities and Exchange Commission has shown interest in investigating the hiring practices of a U.S. food chain—the Chipotle Mexican Grill restaurant chain. Although we’ve seen agreements recently between the Department of Labor and the Internal Revenue Service where they are working together to combat misclassification of employees and independent contractors, the SEC has not before (at least not so publically) become involved in employment matters.
