A couple of thoughts - don't take sole credit for successes- acknowledge the contributions of others; ask upper management for their advice from time to time (and then take it)and acknowledge it; work to be seen as a team player; take on some of the more unpleasant tasks that need to be done so you don't come across as a "glory hound". Most (not all, to be sure) senior managers want competence from their people. What they don't want or like is massive egos and unrestrained ambition.
